Geographical location, size and depth of the facility

Pyhäsalmi is located in central Finland 160 km south from Oulu and 180 km north of Jyväskylä or 350 km from Helsinki. The Deep laboratory facility Lab 2 at depth of 1.44 km is especially suited for particle physics experiments requireing low cosmic ray background.
Vast tunnel network is very suitable for testing of mining and tunneling equipment, especially at levels 75 m (Lab1), 660 m (Lab 4) and 990 m (Lab 3). Also old maintenance levels on 400 provides ample spaces for research.

Major rock type(s)

Granite bedrock, where the mine operation is based around massive vertical shaped volcanogenic sulfide deposit. The bedrock belongs to the Fennoscandia (Baltic) shield. Very little vibration impact from plate tectonics.

Original purpose, current use and future plans

Callio Lab is located in the Pyhäsalmi Mine, operated by First Quantum Minerals (FQM) The mine’s main products are Cu, Zn and pyrite (FS4). The mining operations shall continue to the end of 2019.
In the future, Callio Lab facilitates several types of actors, including research institutions and companies.

Accessibility

All of mine’s tunnels are accessible with a truck from the 11 km long maintenance road extending to the bottom of the mine, down to 1.44 km depth
The fast elevator (3 min) from the surface to main lavel (1.4 km). The maximum speed of the elevator is 12 m/s and person count 20 people.
